Pugwash opens its office in Afghan capital

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): The Canadian-based nongovernmental organisation Pugwash, promoting solutions to armed conflicts in the worldinfo-icon, has opened its office in Kabul.

The Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs is an international organization that brings together scholars and public figures to work toward reducing the danger of armed conflict and to seek solutions to global security threats. 

The organisation hosted a conference in Doha, the capital of Qatar between nearly 40 participants from Kabul and Talibaninfo-icon’s political office in Doha on Jan 23, 2015.

The Pugwash opened its office in Kabul about three days to maintain close contacts with parties involved in the Afghanistaninfo-icon conflict, , a participant of the Qatar conference said.

They would try to pave the way for direct talks between Taliban and the Afghan government, another participant of the conference said.

The sources said Dr. Anwarul Haq, Mirwais Yasini, Haji Farid, Haji Rohullah Nikpa, Syed Ishaq Gilani and some others were members of the Pugwash office.

The organization opens its office ahead of the next round of quadrilateral talks centred on the Afghan peace process on Feb 23 in Kabul.
