Afghanistan beat Oman by 3 wickets in Asia Cup qualifiers
The qualifying round involving Afghanistan, Oman, Hong Kong and the UAE began on Feb 19 in Bangladesh and one qualifier will join the four fancied teams --- hosts Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka --- in the main round.
Afghanistan Cricket Board spokesman Farid Hotak told Pajhwok Afghan News that Oman won the toss and chose to bat in the 20 overs game and managed to set Afghanistan 166 runs target for the loss of four wickets.
For Afghanistan, Gulbadin Naib clinched two wickets and Amir Hamza Hotak and Dawlat Zadran shared one wicket apiece, Hotak said, adding the Afghan batsmen chased the target in the last over with four wickets in hand.
Noor Ali Zadran with 63 runs emerged the top scorer for his side. Asghar Stanikzai contributed 34 runs, Najib Zadran 23 and Samiullah Shinwari and Dawlat Zadran 12 runs each.
In the last over Afghanistan needed 10 runs to win the game. The Afghan side came under immense pressure when Samiullah Shinwari was bowled on the first ball of the last over, but then Dawlat Zadran struck two consecutive sixes, winning the match for his team.
Afghanistan, who lost to the UAE on Friday, will play their third match against Hong Kong on Monday. If Afghanistan defeat Hong Kong with a big margin, they will make it to the main Asia Cup Twenty20.
