‘Farah can become dates exporting province’

‘Farah can become dates exporting province’

Feb 28, 2016 - 17:51

FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): A research shows water and climate of western Farah is suitable for growing date trees and if necessary measures are taken, the province could become a dates exporting region, an official says.

Agricultureinfo-icon Director Eng. Abdul Manan Matin told Pajhwok Afghan News they conducted the research on the growth of date trees in Farah during the past two years.

He said water and weather of Farah was more similar to that of gulf countries and therefore date trees could grow and produce a bumper crop if cultivated.

He said the soil in Farah had all minerals and materials required for date trees and hot sun here would help the dates ripen.

He said four to five centuries ago, there had been date orchards in Khurmaliq locality, but they were destroyed with the passage of time and their ruins still existed.

Eng. Matin said he had the plan to develop date orchards which had been ignored in the past in Farah.

Matin said an agreement between the Ministry of Agriculture and a Qatari charity, Al-Gharafa, had been inked on the development of date orchards in Farah.

According to the agreement, the Al-Gharafa would own date farms for 25 years before handing them over the Afghan government.

He said 10 months had passed since date saplings were planted and each tree had raised by 50cm. Matin said a date tree could produce dates for 100 years and it started bearing dates after four years.

The saplings planted in these farms had been imported from Qatar.  Matin said besides Farah City, the provincial capital, date trees could be planted in Juwayn and Bakwa districts of the province.

Deputy Governor Mohammad Younis Rasouli said Farah’s weather conditions were suitable for the plantation of date trees, adding that a few date trees at the governor’s house, which were more than 30-year-old, produced kilos of date every year.

According to reports, date trees could be planted in 33 countries of the worldinfo-icon. Of these countries, 14 states are in Asia such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Syria, Kuwait, Bahrian and Jordan.
