JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Nangarhar provincial council members on Monday demanded the speedy construction of Behsud bridged, connecting 27 districts, as well as Kunar and Nuristan provinces with Jalalabad.

The old Behsud bridge has been in dilapidated condition, causing frequent traffic jams for hours and creating multiple problems for passengers. Despite repeated requests for the execution of the project, the issue lingers on.

Zabihullah Zmaray, the provincial council chairman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the construction work on the new bridge was going at an agonosingly slow. He asked the government to step up work.

He said: “As the weather is getting hot, the level of water in the river will rise, making the construction work more difficult. We, therefore, request the government to hasten work on the key bridge.”

Dr. Nasir Kamawal, a provincial council member, said residents of 27 districts crossed the Behsud bridgeon a daily basis. But due to rush and snarl-ups, patients cannot reach hospitals on time. Government employee and studentsalso get late.

Public Healthinfo-icon Director Najibullah Kamawalconfirmed the traffic jams on the bridge affected the evacuation of the injured and other patients to hospitals.

Those injured in Saturday’s explosion in Kunar had to be transferred to Jalalabad for treatment, he recalled, complaining ambulances had to wait for a long time at the site. Somehow the injured were taken to Jalalabad.

Attaullah Khogyani, the governor’s spokesman, verified logjams on the bridge. He said the governor had banned trucks traffic in daytime and asked the authorities concerned to step up work on the bridge.

Hameedullah Tolo, the public work director, said 70 percent of construction on the second Behsud bridge had been completed and the remaining work was ongoing at a good clip.
