Gen. Dunford arrives in Kabul to meet Ghani, Stanikzai
Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr. would also hold talks on the current situation in the country with senior government officials, the Pentagon said on Tuesday.
President Barack Obama’s new pick Gen. John W. Nicholson is set to take command of the Resolute Support Mission from Gen. John F. Campbell.
The ceremony will be presided over by Central Command commander Army Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III and German Army Gen. Hans-LotharDomrose.
Dunford will meet President Ashraf Ghani, Defence Minister Masoom Stanikzai and Lt. Gen. Qadam Shah Shameem, chief of staff of the armed forces.
Gen. Campbell, who had succeeded Dunford as the commander of the International Security Assistance Force, has spent 18 months as NATO commander in Afghanistan.
Nicholson has served as commander of NATO’s Allied Land Command based in Izmir, Turkey.
