Abdullah directs forces to ensure election security
KABUL (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (ECO) Abdullah Abdullah on Monday directed the security institutions to make effective preparations to ensure security for parliamentary and district council elections.
Addressing the Council of Minister, Abdullah said the government planned to conduct the long-delayed lower house elections. The security forces should start making therequisite preparations, he added.
Earlier, President Ashraf Ghani issued a second legislative decree on reformingthe country’s electoral system just ahead of the lower house inaugural session.
The CEO termed the reforms vital to the conduct of fair and transparent elections. He renewed the government’s commitment to holding the Wolesi Jirga and district council polls in a free manner.
He also promised cleaning up the election system of the country so that the democratic process was taken forward in the best way possible.
Abdullah hoped the conduct of fair Wolesi Jirga elections would transform the political environment, asking the security forces to be fully prepared to prevent any misadventure.
Earlier, President Ghani also stressed the need for reforms in the election system and conduct of the Wolesi Jirga vote.
The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has already announced the panel had made all technical preparations to conduct the election on October 15, 2016.
