3 killed, 5 injured in clash over Takhar gold mine

3 killed, 5 injured in clash over Takhar gold mine

Mar 08, 2016 - 18:12

TALOQAN (Pajhwok): At least three civilians were killed and another five wounded in a clash over a gold mine in Chah-e-Aab district of northern Takhar province, an official said on Tuesday.

Some people have recently started digging and using explosives at the gold mine, inviting the wrath of local inhabitants who tried to prevent the digging, a resident of Norab locality, Muallim Sadullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

To resolve the conflict, provincial council members and a government delegation visited the area, but the residents opened fire at the delegates and as a result, three civilians were killed and five others were wounded. The injured were evacuated to the district hospital, he said.

Chah-e-Aab district chief Mohammad Atta confirmed the incident, but said the governor had ordered him not to talk with media about every incident and instead inform the governor’s house media cell. He said he had informed the governor’s office about the incident.

However, the governor’s spokesman, Sunatullah Taimor, has been refusing to talk to the media since yesterday.

“Qasim, a PC member, was one of the delegates who went to the area to resolve the issue, but he is yet to return and his cell number is not working,” the PC spokesperson, Noorullah Qanoni, said.
