1st polio case of 2016 detected in Kunar’s Shegal district
ASADABAD (Pajhwok): A new polio case has surfaced in the Shegal district of eastern Kunar province, the public health director said on Sunday.
Dr. Ihsanullah Fazli told Pajhwok Afghan News an 18-month-old baby had caught the poliovirus in the Shultan valley of the district.
He said anti-polio campaigns faced hurdles in the eight districts of the province, where some 8,500 children were deprived of being administered polio drops.
Fazli said it was the first polio case discovered in Afghanistan in 2016.
Governor Wahidullah Kalimzai said they had held meetings with religious scholars and tribal elders on voluntary administration of polio drops.
He pledged to eradicate the poliovirus from the province soon.
