India stresses implementation of UN curbs on Afghan rebels
Greater efforts by the international community were needed to help Kabul arrest the deteriorating security situation, India's permanent representative to the UN said.
Participating in the Security Council debate on Tuesday, Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin referred to an increase in insurgent activities, rising civilian casualtiesand a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
Enhanced engagement by the international community in support of the efforts of the Afghan government was required to deal with the challenges, he insisted.
Akbaruddin stressed the Afghan government’s armed opponents could not be allowed to exercise control over any part of the country to preserve the gains of the past decade and a half.
He affirmed India's support to an Afghan-led reconciliation process that respects the red lines drawn by the people of Afghanistan and the international community.
