National unity a must to safeguard national interest: CEO

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Chioef Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah on Sunday underlined the need for national unity to safeguard Afghanistaninfo-icon’s core interest.

Thousands of people from different provinces, including the CEO, some cabinet ministers, MPs and government officials participated in the ceremony marking the New Year in Mazar-i-Sharif.

Guests from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, as well as representatives of different diplomatic missionsalso took part in the colourfulceremony.The flag was hoisted at about 10:45am.

National unity was the only way to resolve the problems facing the country, Dr. Abdullah told the gathering. Regarding talks with Talibaninfo-icon, he said peace was the need of the people. They were honestly trying to bring stability to the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Balkh GovernorAta Mohammad Noor welcomed the guests, saying Nawroz had been celebratedtraditionally over the centuries.

Regarding recent disruptive activities, he said some insurgents had sneaked into the northern zone. Last year, the militants tried to disrupt Balkh security but they were defeated by security forces, he added.

Most of the Afghans wanted peace, but all dimensions of national security should be considered thoroughly during reconciliation talks to preserve the gains of the past 15years, the governor explained.

About development activities in the past year, he said they constructed nearly 30-km roads, buildings for economics and public administration faculties, hostels for boys and girls, Bakhtar high school, stadiums, a gymnasium and an institute of mother and child care.

Of provincial revenue, he said Balkh’s income had increased by 18 percent during the outgoing year. The province contributed 8 billion afs to the national budget, the governor concluded.
