10 detained on smuggling, kidnapping charges in Herat
HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Ten suspects have been detained on charges of kidnapping and smuggling in western Herat province, officials said on Saturday.
Jilani Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, said the National Directorate of Security (NDS) busted a seven-member group of kidnappers today.
He added the detainees, residents of Korkh district, were detained in the 10th municipality district of Herat City and Injil district during special operations.
The detainees were involved in nine cases of kidnapping, he alleged, saying the intelligence agents also seized explosives, weapons, cell phones and motorbikes.
Separately, five marble-laden vehicles were seized by NDS in the Saha-i-Shaida locality of Injil, frustrating the attempt to smuggle 30 tonnesof marble abroad.
The stone was illegally extracted from Chasht-i-Sharif district’s marble mine. The vehicles were handed over to the Mines and Petroleum Department.
Meanwhile, three abductors have been detained and a civilian was freed from captivity, an official said.
Abdul Rauf Ahmadi, spokesman for provincial police, said a man had been rescued from kidnappers in the Azizabad area of Shindand.
Aqa Gul, Palawan and Ghulam, hailing from Zabul province, had been detained in connection with the kidnapping. The detainees have allegedly confessed to the crime.
