Anti-locust drive launched in Samangan
AIBAK (Pajhwok): A two and a half months long anti-locust campaign was launched in northern Samangan province on Saturday.
Nearly 28,000 hectares of land will be sprayed with insecticides during the campaign, Gulabbuddin Ghayasi, plants protection manager at the Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
More than 5000 litres of insecticide would be used by 100 workers with support of a technical team of the department, he said adding the drive was launched by sending five 10-member and 15-member teams to fields in areas under government control.
Locusts appeared as the weather became warmer in Taikhonak, Rabatak, Manqutan and Laili Sai areas of Aibak, Alasha, Asyaabad, Kokjar, Dasht-i-Larzaghan, Omli and Gawdara areas of Hasrat Sultan district, a campaign member in the district, Abdul Ahmad, said adding millions of locusts might attack crops if urgent steps were not taken.
A district development council member, Allah Noor, warned if grasshoppers were not coped with seriously, they would destroy all agricultural fields and ranges.
