KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah has praised the national cricket team for its tremendous performance and victory against ICC full member West Indies in the Worldinfo-icon Twenty-20 tournament in India.

Chairing a Cabinet meeting, the CEO said the Afghan cricket team made headlines in newspapers worldwide with their stunning performance.

Abdullah said Afghanistaninfo-icon’s sensational victory against West Indies was a huge achievement and the entire nation was overjoyed with the triumph.

The CEO, who earlier flew to India to watch Afghanistan versus England, said the cricket team exhibited good performance in its previous matches against world’s strong teams.

Afghanistan on Sunday recorded a historic six-run victory against unbeaten West Indies in their final World Cup Twenty20 match in Nagpur.

Winning the toss and opting to field, the West Indies stumbled to 117-8 in pursuit of Afghanistan’s 123.

Once at 56-5, Afghanistan managed to post 123-7, with Najib Zadran hitting a composed unbeaten 48.

While bowling, Afghanistan restricted the West Indies to 117-8 to record a historic six-run victory in their ICC World Twenty20 match.

Already out after three defeats in Group One, the Afghans were delighted to finally record a victory against a Test-playing nation.

West Indies, who had won their first three matches, set up a semi-final with Australia or India in Mumbai on Thursday. The result confirms that England will play New Zealand on Wednesday in their semi-final.

Zadran smashed an aggressive 48 to guide Afghanistan to 123/7, striking four fours and one six in his unbeaten 40-ball knock to bring cheers from the small but vocal crowd.
