Afghan cricketers conferred highest civil award
KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has decorated the Afghan cricket players with the Ghazi Mir Masjidi Khan Award, asking national traders to help the cricket team, the president’s office said on Thursday.
During a meeting with the players and officials of the cricket board on Wednesday night, the president conferred the highest civil award on the players for their achievement in the recent Twenty20 World Cup in India.
“You not only brought pride to the Afghans, but you give them hope as well. For your hardworking, all Afghans remember you in their prayers,” the president said, calling the cricketers as heroes.
He praised the Afghan players for making history by beating Zimbabwe twice.
The government would pay more attention to investment on cricket infrastructure and promotion of cricket and football at school level, the president said.
He called on national traders to support the cricket team and create a special fund in this regard.
