At least 3 killed as floods wreak havoc in Uruzgan
TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Flash floods killed three people and forced hundreds of families into leaving their homes in central Uruzgan province, officials said on Saturday.
Triggered by continuous rains, the floods caused financial and human losses in various areas of the province, the provincial council head told Pajhwok Afghan News.
Abdul Karim Khadimzai said Dehrawud, Shaheed Hisas, Gizab districts and Tirinkot, the provincial capital, were the worst hit areas.
He said at least three men were killed and hundreds of acres of agricultural land destroyed and hundreds of families were obliged to leave their houses because of floods. He asked welfare societies to help the victims.
Uruzgan disasters department head, Asmatullah Fayz, said one person was drowned and another was missing in Gizab district in floods.
Another two persons were killed as the roof of their home fell on Friday night in Darafshan locality of the capital, Fayz said. He said the death toll could increase if the rains continued.
It has been raining heavily in central capital Kabul and several other provinces over the past few days, landing local residents in deep trouble.
