Peace accepts no barriers, its people’s right: Pir Gilani

Peace accepts no barriers, its people’s right: Pir Gilani

Apr 06, 2016 - 20:21

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): There should be no barriers to peace which is people’s right, the High Peace Councilinfo-icon chief said on Wednesday, hoping their efforts for peace would at least save some precious lives if not reached the desired goal of a lasting peace.

Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani was addressing a meeting of the board of directors of the Peace Jirgainfo-icon here. Eng. Ahmad Shah Ahmadzai, Ghulam Hassan Gran and Khalilullah Safi attended the meeting.

Gilani said ensuring peace was the responsibility of all Afghans and there should be no restrictions in this regard. “It our duty to provide an environmentinfo-icon of peace and trust to our war-weary nation,” he said.

The spiritual personality said if he was offered the position of president, he would reject the offer in his old age, but he accepted the position of HPC head because peace was an urgent need of all Afghans.

“We hope that the current crisis of Afghanistaninfo-icon would be rooted out. If we don’t reach the goal, at least we could save the lives of some Afghans with our struggle,” he said.

He thanked the Peace Jirga delegation their efforts for peace, saying it should not be a final meeting and hoped such meetings would continue to exchange ideas.

On his turn, Ahmadzai said peace was a leading demand of Afghans and the Peace Jirga would cooperate with the government in bringing peace to the country.

He asked Gilani to convey their message to government officials especially to the president to take practical steps for peace because only talks and slogans were not enough to ensure peace in the country.

He said the government should know conditions of Talibaninfo-icon and share them with foreign forces stationed in Afghanistan, adding if the government compromised on some issues, it would be still a pride.

Another delegate, Gran assured Gilani of always supporting the High Peace Council. “We don’t spearhead any parallel set up to the HPC. We can talk to and consult Taliban, influential Afghans and international community on Afghanistan issues, but we will leave the final decision upon your Excellency,” he said.

He added the Afghanistan conflict was multi-dimensional and a specific group or network could not resolve the conflict that needed joint efforts by the Afghans.
