Kerry arrives in Kabul to reiterate support for unity govt

Apr 09, 2016 - 15:43

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): US Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday arrived in Kabul on an unannounced visit for talks with President Ashraf Ghani.

American media reported Kerry landed in Kabul in the afternoon. He will meet the president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah.

The visiting dignitary is expected to discuss a whole host of issues of bilateral and regional importance, including security, with his interlocutors.

After bilateral meetings, Kerry will address a joint media briefing along with President Ghani later in the day, according to a source in the Presidential Palace.

In Washington, State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters Kerry would reiterate US support for the government of national unity as well as Afghan defence forces.

The secretary, whose trip is part of his weeklong swing through the region, will stress the need for the resumption of peace talks between Kabul and the Talibaninfo-icon, who declined returning to the negotiating table.

"There have been challenges in terms of politics and the resilience…of the Taliban," America’s special envoy to Pakistaninfo-icon and Afghanistaninfo-icon Richard Olson was quoted as saying.
