Mashwani apologises to Durrani as jirga intervenes
On Wednesday, the lower house had summoned Durrani, Finance Minister Eklil Hakimi and Public Works Minister Mahmood Baligh to brief the legislators on issues related to their portfolios.
Each MP was given three minutes to question the ministers. Mushwani spoke for three minutes before microphone was switched off. In a fit of rage, he first tried to pounce at 2nd Deputy Speaker Erfanullah Erfan and then went on and through papers on minister’s face.
After Durrani was whacked, 1st Deputy Speaker Haji Zahir Qadir ordered security officials to take Mushwani out of the Wolesi Jirga hall. Qadir has said Mashwani could not enter the parliament until the house decides so.
However, lawmakers, invoking Article 72nd of the internal rules of business, decided that Mashwani could not attend any sessions for the next 10 days due to his action against the minister.
On Saturday afternoon, a group of political leaders, including dozens of parliamentarians, deputy chief executive officer Eng. Mohammad Khan, Meshrano Jirga chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar, leader of his own faction of Hezb-i-Islami Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal, some former ministers, Jihadi commanders and tribal elders visited Durrani’s house to resolve the issue between him and Mashwani.
Senator Shahzada Shahid from Kunar province apologised on behalf of Kunar people over the act of Mashwani against the minister. He called Durrani ‘a successful minister’ and said was happy over the jirga to remove the differences between the lawmaker and the minister.
Eng. Mohammad Khan insisted such acts should not be repeated, saying the Afghans could resolve many issues through jirgas.
Muslimyar said “On behalf of the people of eastern provinces, I apologise to Durrani who is not a minister of the Hezb-i-Islami or Logar, but of the entire Afghanistan.”
At the end, Mashwani and Durrani hugged each other as a sign of ending their differences.
