A dozen Taliban militants killed in Takhar clash
TALOQAN (Pajhwok): A dozen Taliban fighters were killed and another 35 wounded during clashes with security forces in Darqad district of northeastern Takhar province on Monday, officials said.
Police spokesman Maj. Abdul Khalil told Pajhwok Afghan News Taliban militants launched consecutive attacks on several security checkpoints near Darqad centre, but they were pushed back by security forces.
He said at least 12 insurgents were killed and another 35 were wounded during the clashes. A public order policeman was also killed and five others, including local policemen, were wounded. Three dead bodies of the rebels remained lying on the scene, he added.
A resident of Darqad district said the militants had been closing in on Darqad city but were pushed back by security forces. A senior Taliban commander was among the slain fighters, he added.
There has been no word from the Taliban.
