Iranian police stop candlelight vigil for 6-year-old Afghan girl
KABUL (Pajhwok): Iranian police have thwarted a gathering in memory of a six-year-old Afghan girl who was raped before being killed near Tehran, a news report said on Tuesday.
The rape and slaying of Setayesh Quraishi has provoked outrage in Afghanistan. She was kidnapped and raped by her 17-year-old neighbour in Varamin area of Tehran. She was later sprinkled with acid.
An Iranian news agency quoted journalists and witnesses as blaming police for not allowing them to light candles for the slain girloutside the Afghan embassy in Tehran.
According to ISNA, several Afghans who had tried to gather at another location had been detained. The incident has led to solidarity and sympathy for the victim’s family.
