13 militants dead in Jawzjan air and ground offensive
SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): At least 13 Taliban have been killed and eight others, including group leader Qari Niamatullah, arrested in northern Jawzjan province, an official said on Saturday.
Mohammad Reza Ghafoori, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News security forces successfully repulsed an overnight rebel attack on their check-posts.
In the ensuing clash, 13 guerrillas were killed and eight others detained by the security personnel, who also had air support, the spokesman said, adding the detainees included Taliban’s group leader.
But Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid rejected the claim as groundless, alleging that innocent civilians, including women and children, had been killed in the airstrike.
He said the arrested individuals were local elders who had no connection with the Taliban.
Shukrulah, the resident of locality, said one woman was wounded in the air raid, but the Taliban suffered more casualties.
