Walk the talk on terrorism, senators ask President Ghani
KABUL (Pajhwok): Senators on Tuesday welcomed President Ashraf Ghani’saddressing to the joint sitting of parliament, stressing the implementation of his vows and suggestinga Loya Jirga on dealing with the current challenges.
He asked Pakistan to remain committed to its counterterrorism promises; otherwise his administration would move the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and mount a diplomatic campaign against the neighbour.
Meshrano Jirga Chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar welcomed the presidential remarks and asked the government to execute death-row rebels. He said people were already losing trust in government leaders, who had yet to keep their promises.
Senator Zalmai Zabuli supported the president’s resolve, saying: “Sixty-two detained insurgents have been awarded the capital punishment. The president must honour his promises and execute them.”
However, Zabuli said the president did not talk about the Loya Jirga promised by him and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Abdullah within two years of the formation of the national unity government.
The assembly of tribal elders, intellectuals and government officials was needed to take a decision on how to deal with the ongoing situation in the country, he believed, urging the government to pave the ground for the jirga.
Gul Ahmad Azami, another senator, said he would support the president when he translated his words into concrete action. He criticised Ghani for ignoring the Loya Jirga on amending the constitution and ending the ongoing conflict.
Azamiwanted Pakistan, China and the United States, part of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group,to cooperate with Afghanistan in eliminating the militants who opposed the peace process if they honestly desired stability in Afghanistan.
