Atmar, Indian envoy talk Salma Dam’s inauguration
KABUL (Pajhwok): National Security Advisor Hanif Atmar and Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan Manpreet Vohra discussed preparations to inaugurate the recently completed Salma Dam in western Herat province, the National Security Council said on Monday.
A statement from the council said Atmar thanked India for funding the dam project and said India had always supported the Afghan nation and government by implementing infrastructure development projects.
Atmar assured the Indian ambassador that the Afghan government would make preparations for the inauguration of the vital project.
For his part, Vohra said his country wished inauguration of the project would help boost Afghanistan economy. He said Indian people and government would continue supporting Afghanistan until the country attained self-sufficiency.
Salma Dam, a $ 300 million hydroelectric and irrigation project, has been constructed on Hari Rud River in Chiste Sharif district of Herat. The dam has the capacity to generate 42 megawatts of electricity and irrigate 80,000 hectares of land.
