Presence of foreign rebels in Badakhshan a big concern: Rabbani
FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): The foreign minister on Thursday called the presence of foreign rebels in northeastern Badakhshan province a concern for neighbouring countries, saying the government was trying to address the issue.
During a visit to the remote province, Salahuddin Rabbani met residents and officials. He described Badakhshan one of important provinces of Afghanistan, bordering three countries.
Some foreign militants active in the province were fuelling worries among Afghanistan’s neighbours, he acknowledged. However, he promised the government would deal with them with the cooperation of the international community.
Rabbani said that he would participate in the Brussels Conference, where he would discuss Afghanistan’s security, particularly the situation in Badakhshan province. The event is scheduled for early October.
He agreed the government was beset by many problems, including joblessness, insecurity and economic problems. But in the same breath, the minister touted the government’s commitment to dealing with the challenges.
“Youths’ migration to foreign countries is one of the major challenges, but we are trying to increase job opportunities for them, particularly for educated and professional people who can serve their country,” he concluded.
