Take effective actions against terrorist groups, US tells Pakistan
WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): Taking a strong exception to Islamabad rejecting Kabul’s demands for military action against the Taliban commanders in its territory, the US on Wednesday said Pakistan “can and must” take effective actions against all terrorist groups.
“Pakistan has an opportunity to show that it is serious about delegitimising, disrupting and dismantling terrorists that threaten regional security,” State Department spokesperson Elizabeth Trudeau told Pajhwok Afghan News.
She was asked to comment on Pakistan Foreign Policy Advisor Sartaj Aziz’s rejection of President Ashraf Ghani’s call for Islamabad to evict Taliban insurgents through military action or arrest and hand them over to Kabul for trial and punishment for killing innocent Afghans.
“President Obama recently said Pakistan can and must take effective action against terrorist groups that operate from its own territory,” Trudeau said, reminding Islamabad of its anti-terror pledges.
“Insecurity is a threat to Pakistan’s own interests and to the region,” said the State Department spokesperson.
