75 flood-affected families assisted in Samangan
AIBAK (Pajhwok): Some 75 families affected by recent flash floods were distributed cash assistance and food items sent by Afghan citizens living in Saudi Arabia in northern Samangan province.
A member of a local commission that distributed the assistance, Mohammad Amin Azizi, told Pajhwok Afghan News the families suffered from floods at the beginning of May in Zhwandoon valley on the outskirts of Aibak, the provincial capital.
People from the affected areas, who live in Saudi Arabia, had collected 1.2 million afghanis from other people living there and sent the money for the affected families, with each family receiving 12,000 afs, 25-kg of rice and 20-litre of cooking oil.
One of the beneficiaries of the aid, 51-year-old Mohammad Azai, was happy over the assistance and said his house was damaged and four livestock perished in the floods.
Meanwhile, governor’s spokesman Mohammad Siddique Azizi said local officials were in contact with donor agencies and the World Food Programme and UNHCR had pledged to assistance with the flood affected families.
Nearly 100 houses were completely destroyed, another 377 houses partially damaged, 2200 acres of farming land washed away and 20 small bridges were destroyed in the floods that killed 172 household animals on May, 2, he said.
