8 police defect to insurgents in Uruzgan
TIRINKOT/PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): At least eight policemen defected to the Taliban in Charchinu district of central Uruzgan province, an official said on Saturday.
The Charchiny district police chief, 1st Lt. Rahimullah, told Pajhwok Afghan News the eight policemen, who performed duty at separate localities, had joined the rebels along with their weapons on Monday.
Rahimullah said an investigation into the defections had been launched.
The Taliban have said nothing about the policemen joining their ranks.
Elsewhere, one policeman was killed and another two wounded during a landmine explosion in central Logar province, the governor’s spokesman said.
Saleem Saleh told Pajhwok the roadside bomb ripped through the police ranger-pickup vehicle on Saturday afternoon in Mazgin locality of Mohammad Agha district.
However, a Taliban spokesman claimed three policemen were killed in the explosion.
