US disappointed over denial of new Afghan visa extension
WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The Obama Administration on Friday expressed its disappointment over decision of a Congressional panel to deny extension and authorisation of new special categories visas for Afghans, an official said.
“The State Department is disappointed that the Senate Armed Services Committee did not extend or authorize new visas for the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa Program, which enables Afghans who have worked alongside US troops and its diplomats to seek refuge in the United States,” John Kirby, the State Department spokesman, said.
Thousands of Afghans had performed this vital work -- often at great personal risk and many, as you also knew, had lost their lives doing it,” he said.
“Many are continuing to face threats to themselves, to their families, to their livelihoods. These Afghan civilians have been essential to accomplishing our mission in Afghanistan,” Kirby said.
