KABUL staff, students and provide equipment for schoolsin 17 provinces of the country.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Kabul on Tuesday between the education minister and representatives of the Afghanistan Welfare Association, International Rescue Committee, and children support organisations.

Addressing a press conference, Education MinisterAsadullah Hanif Balkhi voiced optimistic about raising public awareness and scaling up the quality of education in the provinces.

On the basis of first MoU, nine school buildings would be constructed at a cost of $14,000 and other equipment such as chairs, benches, tents and stationery would be provided in Paktia, Paktika and Logar provinces, he said.

A second project costing $400,000 would be implemented for the capacity development of ministry staff, teachers and students. It will help educate some of the natural disasters-affected people in Kabul and Jawzjan provinces.

A third MoU is regarding providing textbooks to students in Faryab, Jawzjan, Badakhshan, Takhar, Bamyan, Kunduz, Nangarhar, Kandahar, Sar-i-Pul, Balkh and Kabul. The project will account for $1.8 million.

In addition to the schemes, $474,000 would be spent on strengthening people’s preparedness for national disasters through training courses in Sar-i-Pul, Jawzjan, Takhar, Badakhshan, Samangan, Ghor, Bamyan and Balkh provinces. The fund for the project would be provided by the UK’s Department for International Development.

Another $427,000 would be spent by Holland for facilitating 1,200 students of Helmand and Kabul provinces to have access to education, the minister explained.

Under the sixth MoU, 725 male and female preschoolers in Kabul would be provided education facilities and increasing awareness among parents, Balkhi concluded.
