Kabul-Parwan highway closed in protest against NDS raid
KABUL (Pajhwok): A large number of residents of Qarabagh district on Wednesday blocked the Kabul-Parwan highway in protest against the arrest of four area inhabitants by intelligence agents.
The protest against the National Directorate of Security (NDS) raid erupted in the Akakhel locality of the district and is still ongoing. Participants are chanting slogans against the spy service.
Ehsanullah, one of the demonstrators, told Pajhwok Afghan News over the telephone that NDS operatives had arrested four Islamic scholars during an overnight raid in the area.
The protest was aimed at to force the intelligence agency into releasing the detainees, he said. Qarabagh district chief, Samiullah Sharifi, confirmed the arrests.
He said around 400 people took to the streets and blocked the highway. But Sharifi slammed the protest as illegal, arguing the government had the right to detain suspects for interrogations.
