Taliban elect Maulvi Haibatullah as successor to Mansour
Three days earlier, the US announced Mansour was killed in a raid on his car in the Dalbandin area of Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province. However, the Taliban confirmed the loss of their leader today.
Following three days of negotiations, Taliban’s spokesmen Zabihullah Mujahid and Qari Yousuf Ahmadi confirmed that Mansour was killed in the US drone attack.
In a statement, they said Mansour was killed between the Registan area of Kandahar province and Nawshaki area of Balochistan on May 21.
The Taliban said they had chosen Maulvi Haibatullah Akhundzada as their new leader based discussions and suggestions of their leadership council.
Maulvi Sirajuddin Haqqani and Maulvi Mohammad Yaqoob, son of Mullah Mohammad Omar, have been elected as Akhundzada’s deputies.
