14 policemen suffer casualties in Helmand clashes
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): At least four policemen have been killed and 10 others wounded during a clash in southern Helmand province, an official said on Sunday.
Police suffered the casualties on Saturday night when the insurgents stormed a number of check-posts in the Sra Khash area of Greshk district, the governor’s spokesman said.
Omar Zwaktold Pajhwok Afghan News four policemen, including Afghan Local Police (ALP) commander Safar Mohammad, were killed and seven others wounded in the attack.
But an official based in Greshk district, wishing not to be named, said Safar Mohammad was the first man to rise against the Taliban in the district two years ago.
“Taliban captured Safar Mohammad after the attack on security posts. Later, the rebels hanged him and then fired at his dead body,” the source revealed. The fighters also captured a number of security posts in Alokozai Khakh area.
Zwak said the Taliban attacked security posts in the Shawal area of Nad Ali district.He added three policemen including commander Mohammad Nasim were wounded during the attacks.
A local resident, Sulaiman confirmed the militants had stormed security posts in Shawal area.“It was 11pm when the Taliban launched attacks on security posts. They planted bombs on local roads before conducting assaults,” he said.
Both sides suffered heavy casualties, he said. But Sulaimandid not have exact figures. Security officials have not yet commented on the incidents.
However, Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed they had captured eight security posts in Nahr-i-Saraj and Greshk districts.He said 61 policemen were killed and many others wounded.
Helmand is one of the most restive provinces of Afghanistan where the militants have control over parts of the provincial capital and four districts.
