6 policemen killed, 11 wounded in Helmand firefight

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): At least six policemen have been killed and nearly a dozen others wounded during a clash with militants in the Greshk district of southern Helmand province, an official said on Monday.

Capt. Mohammad Ismail Khpalwak, the district police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the firefight took place on Sunday nightwhen the insurgents stormed a number of security posts in Malgir area.

He said six policemen were killed and 11 others injured during the clashes, but no security post fell to the militants.Khpalwak added the fighters also suffered casualties, but he did not have exact figures.

But a local security official, who wished not to be named, said 17 policemen were killed and seven others disappeared in the overnight clashes. Two security posts were also captured by rebels, the source said.

The Talibaninfo-icon have not yet commented on the clashes, but claimed capturing three posts in Baba Ji area on the outskirts of the provincial capital.They said 16 policemen were killed and one captured.

Also on Saturday night, several policemen suffered casualties during similar Taliban attacks on security posts in different areas of the province.
