IFJ asks Kabul for explanation over journalist’s detention
KABUL (Pajhwok): The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has voiced its concern at the three-day detention of an Afghan reporter working for the BBC.
Naimatullah Karyab was arrested by Afghan special forces in Jalalabad on May 28 and handed over to the National Directorate of Security Agency (NDS).
During the detention, he was searchedand his communication equipment seized. Mistaken for another person with same name, he was freed three days later.
A statement from the IFJ said: “The detention of Naimatullah Karyab without valid reasons is a press freedom violation that weakens the Afghan media’s ability to report in fearless manner.”
While expressing its serious concern over the detention, the international media protection group asked the Afghan government to provide an explanation for the incident.
Karyab, a local correspondent of BBC, is alsothe Afghanistan Independent Journalists Association (AIJA) head for eastern Kunar province.
