99 insurgents, 16 soldiers dead in operations, says MoD
KABUL(Pajhwok): Nearly 100 insurgents have been killed and 60 others injured in security operations across the country in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Defence claimed on Thursday.
"As a result of joint clearing operations by Afghan security and defense forces, 99 armed insurgents were killed and 60 others wounded," a statement from the ministry said.
Heavy artillery and air force supported the ground forces during the raids in 18 different provinces. At least 48 fighters including a commander were killed and 36 wounded in southeastern Paktika province.
Afghan National Army (ANA) warplanes pounded insurgent hideouts in Zeruk and Gayan districts,the ministry said, acknowledging the loss of 16 army personnel as a result of separate attacks.
Three aid workers of a non-governmental organisation were shot dead after armed militants intercepted their vehicle in a remote village of central Parwan province late on Wednesday.
