Helmand deputy police chief injured in roadside bombing
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The deputy police chief for southern Helmand province was critically injured in a roadside bombing that killed another policeman on the road between the provincial capital and Marja district on Thursday.
Helmand police chief Brig. Gen. Aqa Noor told Pajhwok Afghan News the blast ripped through Col. Ghulam Jilani Kharotai’s armoured vehicle on the Lashkargah-Marja highway before noon. He said the blast injured Kharotai and killed another policeman.
Officials at the Emergency-run hospital in Lashkargah confirmed receiving two injured persons from the scene. They said the deputy police chief had one of his legs severed in the blast and that his condition was critical.
Lashkargah and Nad Ali districts have been the scene of intense clashes between security forces and Taliban militants over the past few days. Dozens of security forces have so far suffered casualties during the clashes.
The Ministry of Defence has said commando and strike forces had been sent to Helmand to bring the situation under control.
