FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): A large number of residents and civil societyinfo-icon activists in northeastern Badakhshan province on Thursday held a protest gathering and asked the government to arrest those behind the abduction and execution of passengers in northern Kunduz province.

Talibaninfo-icon gunmen executed at least 10 men from a group of nearly 200 men, womeninfo-icon and children they forcibly removed from three civilian buses on May 30 in Ali Abad district of northern Kunduz province, the UN mission in Afghanistaninfo-icon said on Thursday.

In Badakhshan, the protestors, who had gathered in Faizabad, the provincial capital, chanted slogans against President Ashraf Ghani.

Badakhshan civil society foundation head Saifuddin told Pajhwok Afghan News that it was the government’s responsibility to protect citizens. He said the government should take urgent steps to strengthen security on highways.

He called the killing of passengers in Kunduz as crime against humanity and said the Afghans had run out of patience and could not longer tolerate such brutal acts.

Haqdar Sharif, another civil society activist, said the government was unable to protect people and maintain security on highways and that was why the Taliban snatched passengers from buses at a distance of 500 metres from security posts.

Human Rights Commission official in Badakhshan Arifa Naveed said the government should respond to people’s demands and that negligence of security officials in protection of people was intolerable.
