Salma Dam’s inauguration a huge achievement: Ismail Khan
HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Former energy and water minister Mohammad Ismail Khan on Saturday hailed Salma dam’s inaugurationas a huge millstone for the people of Afghanistan.
The 1978 coup against the government of Mohammad Daud Khan, India had planned to build the dam, but due to insecurity, the project was delayed for 40 long years.
The $300 million dam is located two kilometers from the Salma village of the Chisht-i-Sharif district of the province and 176km east of Herat City, the provincial capital.
Construction work on the dam came to an end after 45 years of wait in July 2015. In 1978 India pledged constructing the dam, but the coup and subsequent conflict in Afghanistan left the project hamstrung.
Ismail Khan told Pajhwok Afghan News 97% of work on the dam had been completed during his tenure as ministerof energy and water. The water reservoir’s construction began a year back.
He said with the completion of the dam, farmers’problem of irrigation water shortage would be resolved. The project would create jobs for residents of Herat and other provinces, Khan concluded.
