Ghani writes to UN chief on parliamentary election
KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani in a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has assured holding the country’s parliamentary and district council elections in the given timeframe, an official said on Sunday.
Deputy presidential spokesman Syed Zafar Hashmi told reporters here that the president in his letter to the UN chief had explained Afghanistan’s preparation for the elections, which would be an Afghan-led process.
He said the Afghan government wanted the international community to help it conduct transparent elections which were acceptable to all Afghans.
Hashmi said the president had appointed two committees – financial and security – headed by Finance Minister Eklil Hakimi and Defence Minister Taj Mohammad Jahid respectively.
He said Hakimi was responsible to arrange funds for the elections in cooperation with the international community and Jahid was responsible to ensure security for the polls.
He said the Wolesi Jirga should approve the presidential decree on electoral reform in order to accelerate the reform process and holding the elections.
