Gen. Nicholson submits 3-month review of Afghan war
US Army Gen. John W. Nicholson’s review, which is likely to include a request for keeping more American soldiers in Afghanistan to boost the institutional capacity of the local forces.
The Associated Press quoted an unnamed official as saying that the top general, who took up his assignment in March, had completed his review and presented to Pentagon bosses.
While analysing the current threat level from militant outfits in Afghanistan, the review may assess resources to deal with the challenge besides highlighting operational needs.
The suggestions may also touch on different aspects of the Afghan personnel’s preparedness - from operational capability and training needs to equipment, facilities, maintenance and logistics, discipline and accountability.
Under Nicholson’s leadership, 9,800 Americans and 3,000 troops from other NATO nations are part of the Resolute Support mission to train Afghan forces.
