Slain journalists: Helmand governor promises reinvestigation

Slain journalists: Helmand governor promises reinvestigation

Jun 16, 2016 - 16:00

LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): The governor on Thursday promised reinvestigation into the cases of journalists so far killed in southern Helmand province.

About eight years ago, Pajhwok reporter Abdul Samad Rohani and New York Times reporter Noor Ahmad Noori were found dead under mysterious circumstances.

A Radio and Television Afghanistaninfo-icon (RTA) reporter Abdul Hadi Hamdard was killed in a roadside bombing and another journalist Nazar Mohammad Majnoonyar was killed in a foreign forces’ airstrike in Helmand.

To remember the slain persons, journalists on Thursday held a gathering in Lashkargah, the provincial capital. Besides the governor, the appellant attorney, the provincial National Directorate of Security head and a number of other government officials attended the event.

Helmand union of journalist president Zainullah Stanikzai speaking on the occasion said the cases of slain journalists should be investigated and the killers brought to justice.

“Journalists work under pressure because the cases of their slain colleagues are yet to be investigated,” he said.

Stanikzai complained a number of government departments refused to share timely and correct information with journalists in Helmand.

All government departments are bound to provide journalists information they need under the law on access to information.

Helmand provincial council chief Karim Khan Atal praised journalists for their activities and said despite many problems journalist were able to publish reports about administrative corruption, drug smuggling and security incidents in a timely manner.

He said the provincial council supported protection and work of journalists and urged judicial organs to reinvestigate murder cases of reporters.

Speaking on the occasion, Helmand Governor Hayatullah Hayat promised that the cases of slain journalists would be reinvestigated.

He also promised steps needed in areas of journalists’ access to information and their security and protection.

It merits mentioning here that after the mysterious killing of Rohani and Noori, security officials had said their cases had been investigated and the killers would be arrested soon. But years on, no arrests could be made.
