WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The United States and other international agencies are monitoring the situation about Afghan refugees in Pakistaninfo-icon and is in close contact with officials in Islamabad, a US official said Wednesday.

“We are in close contact with the Government of Pakistan as it manages these complex issues,” the State Department Deputy Spokesman, Mark Toner, told Pajhwok Afghan News in response to a question on the developments in Pakistan about Afghan refugees.

“We, along with the UN refugee agency UNHCR continue to monitor the situation and advocate for humanitarian treatment of all Afghan refugees,” he said.

The United States, he said, has encouraged and will continue to strongly encourage the Government of Pakistan to treat migrants in accordance with international humanitarian principles.

“We also recognize Pakistan’s genuine concerns and its right to undertake appropriate measures to enforce its immigration laws,” Toner said.

“We remain grateful to the government and people of Pakistan for hosting one of the worldinfo-icon’s largest refugee populations for nearly four decades,” Toner said adding the US recognizes this is a tremendous challenge for its economy and public services.
