All refugees should return to their homeland: Zakhilwal

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): The Afghan ambassador to Pakistaninfo-icon has apprised the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister of the problems being faced by refugees in the northwestern province.

Dr. Omar Zakhilwal said he himself wanted all Afghan refugees to return to their homeland with honouras soon as possible. But insecurity in Afghanistaninfo-icon forced them to come back to Pakistan, he said.

At a meeting with Pervez Khattak and other senior officials at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Peshawar on Thursday, the diplomatassured all hurdles to the repatriation of refugees would be cleared.

Khattak called refugees’ registration essential, saying the basic problem was the stay of unregistered foreigners in the province. Serious steps were required to address the issue, he believed.

The overall security situation in the region, repatriation of Afghan refugees and other matters of mutual interest figured at the meeting.Khattak said dealing with challenges jointly was the prime obligation of both countries.

KP police chief, Nasir Khan Durrani,denied any discrimination against the Afghan refugees, but across the board checkswere being undertaken and even a Pakistanis faced legal proceedings for not having identity cards.
