Democrats to press Pakistan on terrorist safe havens

Democrats to press Pakistan on terrorist safe havens

Jul 02, 2016 - 09:19

WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The Democratic Party, in its draft platform, has promised pushing for an Afghan-led peace process and pressing Pakistaninfo-icon to deny terrorist sanctuaries on its soil.

“Democrats will continue to push for an Afghan-led peace process and press Pakistan to deny all terrorists sanctuary on its soil,” said the draft Democratic platform released here on Friday.

Set to be adopted by the Democratic Party at its Philadelphia convention, the platform is the guiding document of the party’s nominee Hillary Clinton for the next US president in the November elections.

The platform supported President Barack Obama’s decision to maintain a limited troop presence in Afghanistaninfo-icon and ensure that it never again served as a haven for terrorists to plan and launch attacks on the US.

“In Afghanistan, we will work with the NATOinfo-icon-led coalition to bolster the democratically-elected government as it assumes a primary role in tackling terrorism, forges a more secure future for the country, and safeguards advances, like securing womeninfo-icon’s rights,” the platform said.

“As we prosecute the fight against terrorism, Democrats will repudiate vile tactics that would do us harm. We reject Donald Trump’s vilification of Muslims,” it added.

“It violates the religious freedom that is the bedrock of our country, feeds into ISIS’ nefarious narrative, and alienates people and countries who are crucial to defeating terrorism,” it added.

While rejecting Trump’s suggestion that the US military should engage in war crimes, like murdering civilians related to suspected terrorists or torturing prisoners, the party argued such tactics ran counter to American principles.
