Above 5,000 projects executed in 6 months: Durrani
KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) on Sunday said more than 5,000 projects were executed in different provinces during the first half of the current solar year.
MRRD Minister Nasir Ahmad Durrani was addressing the Meshrano Jirga or upper house of parliament after being summoned over what lawmakers said weak performance of the ministry.
Senators claimed corruption, lack of balance in projects’ implementation and nepotistic employment had resulted in poor performance of the ministry.
However, MRRD minister said his ministry had significant achievements in bringing transparency to its affairs and projects’ implementation.
Durrani said he was ready to resign if anyone proved with evidence corruption in his office. He said his ministry was able to implement 5,248 projects worth $145 million in different provinces during the past six months.
He added 8,000 other projects were being implemented. “Such projects were implemented in the past without maintaining a balance in provinces, but now they are balanced and prioritised,” Durrani said.
However, the minister said balance had not been maintained in optional projects of some donor organizations in the past due to security problems and the ministry’s focus had been on some specific provinces.
Durrani said investment in development projects in Ghazni, Zabul, Paktia, Nimroz, Farah, Maidan Wardak, Daikundi and Kunar provinces had been lowest before his becoming of MRRD minister.
He said implementation of development projects had been increased and balance observed in the mentioned provinces in 2016. He said some projects for unstable areas were also in the pipeline after security improvement there.
But Meshrano Jirga chairman Fazl Hadi Muslimyar said the ministry’s current efforts at uniform development were not enough.
He asked the MRRD to focus more on less-developed provinces and said projects should implemented based on people’s requirements, not based on powerful individuals’ demand.
Durrani confirmed in some cases his ministry faced with interference attempts of powerful individuals during projects’ implementations, but said they had ignored such attempts.
