Security forces, Taliban claim inflicting casualties on each other
LASHKARGAH (Pajhwok): Security forces and Taliban militants on Wednesday claimed inflicting casualties on each other in the Sangin district of southern Helmand province.
The rebels launched attacks on some security posts in the troubled district last night, triggering a battle that left 31 attackers dead and 17 others wounded, the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
He said two security officials were injured in the incident and their condition was stable.
The Taliban also confirmed the clash. Their spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the fighters captured four security posts in Sur Ghogyan and Kandahar Ada areas and killed 29 security men.
He also said the rebels had captured a security post in Labrez Karez area of Garamsir district at the cost of losing two fighters. He said another three fighters were wounded in the clash in Garamsir.
In southern Kandahar province, the Afghan Specail Forces Unit conducted an operation in the Maiwand district and detained 21 persons along with explosives and other ammunition.
Kandahar police spokesman Zia Durrani said the operation was conducted last night based on an intelligence report. He said the detainees were either insurgents or had links with them.
He said three bomb-rigged motorcycles, three walkie-talkies, one AK-47 assault rifle and one pistol were also recovered from the detainees.
Also in Maiwand district, a man was reduced from his kidnappers and two persons were arrested in connection with his kidnapping.
The governor’s spokesman, Samim Khalwak, the man had been kidnapped from Shah Syed Mohammad area. The kidnapped person was rescued by security forces and two kidnappers were detained. But the real culprit was at large and police were searching for him, the official said.
In the Spin Boldak border town, a fire broke out and engulfed three fuel selling shops, causing half a million afghanis loss to the owners, according to police.
Police spokesman Zia Durrani said the fire erupted due to an electric short circuit in Manda area. He said firefighters quickly reached the area and controlled the blaze, preventing human losses.
