4 butchers arrested for ‘selling’ donkey meat in Balkh
MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Police on Wednesday arrested four butchers after being accused of selling donkey’s meat in the Sholgar district of northern Baghlan province.
Balkh police spokesman Sher Jan Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News the four butchers were arrested in Khwaja Sikandar area of the district.
He said the four men on Wednesday slaughtered a donkey and wanted to sell its meat or consume it themselves.
Durrani said eating donkey’s meat was against Islamic and Afghanistan’s laws and the detainees had violated those laws.
He said the four butchers had been brought to Mazar-i-Sharif from Sholgar district and were currently being questioned.
Civil society activist, Ustad Baheer, told Pajhwok Afghan News previously there had been reports about the selling of horse meat in the province.
He said police should take strict measures against people involved in selling of donkey and horse meat. He suggested harsh punishment for the four butchers from Sholgar.
Nasir, another resident, said he used to avoid eating meat since hearing about the selling of donkey, horse and dog meat in the media.
