Af-Pak technical group set to meet on border management
PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A joint Afghan-Pakistani technical working group will hold its maiden session next week on border management and related security issues, a newspaper reported on Saturday.
Last month, Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and Foreign Minister agreed to set up the mechanism during a meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tashkent.
According to The Express Tribune, the meeting is scheduled for July 26 in Kabul.Apart from foreign ministers, national security advisors from the two sides will also meet as part of the tension-defusing arrangement.
“The expert-level meeting to be led by Pakistan’s director-general of military operations and his Afghan counterpart will formulate terms of references (ToRs) for the consultation mechanism on border management.”
Islamabad is said to be confident of the mechanism preventing a recurrence of border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The maiden meeting would take place once the ToRs were finalised, officials said.
