Balkh inferno causes millions of afghanis loss
MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A huge fire caused a loss of millions of afghanis to local residents in Sholgar district of northern Balkh province, an official said on Monday.
Police spokesman Sher Jan Durrani told Pajhwok Afghan News the fire broke out near the district bazaar on Sunday night.
He said firefighters were able to extinguish the fire early this morning. However, Durrani did not provide information about the losses.
Abdullah, a resident of the area, said 15 shops, a hotel, an LPG and fuel station, three cars and a Kamaz truck full of goods were gutted in the fire.
A tribal elder from the area, Haji Mirwais, told Pajhwok that the firefighters arrived few hours later when the fire had already caused a lot of damage.
The elder said a leak of LPG at the fuel station caused the fire and the gas connections had been extended to a number of nearby shops. He asked the government to help the affected people.
