11 drown in Kokcha River as vehicle veers off road
FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Nearly a dozen people have drowned in a river in the Baharak district of northeastern Badakhshan province, an official said on Saturday.
The district’s administrative chief, Abdul Sami Attique, told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident occurred late on Friday when a vehicle veered off the road and fell in Kokcha River.
He said 11 passengers drowned and a 12th was wounded in the incident, which happened in Khwaja Abdal area. The vehicle was on its way from Baharak to Faizabad, the provincial capital.
Attique added the dead, whose bodies were yet to be fished out, included the driver. The ill-fated vehicle has not been found as yet, according to the district chief.
He said: “All the victims were residents of Takhar province, going to Badakhshan for recreation. Two of them, enrolled in a Turkish university, were relatives of the Badakhshan governor.”
